Superconductivity in Heavy Fermion Compounds

The heavy electron state in intermetallic lanthanide and actinide compounds has its origin in the interplay of strong Coulomb repulsion in the 4fand 5fshells and their hybridisation with conduction band states. Heavy quasiparticles have mostly been observed in Ceand U-based intermetallics which are therefore at the focus of this review. Ideally the ground state in these strongly correlated elec...

First-principles simulations of heavy fermion cerium compounds based on the Kondo lattice.

We propose a new framework for first-principles calculations of heavy-fermion materials. These are described in terms of the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian with the parameters extracted from a realistic density functional based calculation which is then solved using continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method and dynamical mean field theory. As an example, we show our results for the Néel temperature...

Kondo Lattice and Magnetic Properties in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

We review here the magnetic properties of some strongly correlated electron systems and especially cerium and uranium compounds. The normal Kondo lattice model with a localized S = 1/2 spin can account for the Kondo-magnetism competition observed in cerium or ytterbium systems, while the underscreened Kondo lattice model with a localized S = 1 spin can well account for the ferromagnetism — Kond...

Hybridization gap in heavy fermion compounds.

We report the results of optical studies of new heavy fermion compounds YbFe(4)Sb(12) and CeRu(4)Sb(12). We show that these compounds, as well as several other heavy fermion materials with a nonmagnetic ground state, obey a universal scaling relationship between the quasiparticle effective mass m(*) and the magnitude of the energy gap Delta in the excitation spectrum. This result is in accord w...
